European Innovation Council
EIC Pathfinder
Up to €4M for visionary early-stage research on breakthrough technologies that don't yet exist.
About the EIC Pathfinder
The EIC Pathfinder funds visionary research on breakthrough technologies at low Technology Readiness Levels (TRL 1–4). It supports the exploration of radical new scientific ideas with the potential to underpin future market-creating innovation. Two variants: Open (bottom-up, any topic) with grants up to €3M; and Challenges (top-down, specific strategic areas) with grants up to €4M. Consortia of 3+ partners from 3+ different EU/associated countries are required. Pathfinder is essentially the Horizon Europe successor to FET-Open and FET-Proactive from Horizon 2020. Successful projects often include fundamental science alongside early applied research — for example, using novel physics to enable new sensors, or exploring unproven biomedical mechanisms. The scheme is explicitly high-risk; incremental or well-understood technologies are not competitive.

Frequently asked questions
+What is the difference between Pathfinder Open and Challenges?
Open is bottom-up — any scientific topic is eligible, as long as the research is visionary and high-risk. Challenges are top-down — the EU publishes specific strategic research areas each year (quantum, bio-interfaces, etc.) and applicants propose projects within those themes.
+Can my project include applied research?
Yes, but the core must be fundamental or early-applied (TRL 1–4). Projects entirely at TRL 5+ are not competitive — they belong in EIC Transition or EIC Accelerator instead.
+What is a "visionary breakthrough technology"?
Technologies that don't yet exist, based on scientific principles that haven't been fully exploited, with potential to create new industries. Evaluators specifically reward radical departures from the state of the art.
+Can my Pathfinder project lead to an EIC Transition or Accelerator grant?
Yes — that's the intended EIC pathway. Pathfinder de-risks the science, Transition matures the technology, Accelerator commercialises it. The EU explicitly encourages follow-through across the three instruments.
