Wellcome Trust
Wellcome Early-Career Award
Salary + up to £400,000 over 5 years for researchers establishing their own independent research programme.
About the Wellcome Early-Career Award
The Wellcome Early-Career Award funds researchers who are transitioning to independence — typically at the stage where they are leaving postdoc positions and starting their own research line. Funding covers salary for 5 years plus up to £400,000 for research costs (personnel, consumables, equipment, travel). Applicants must have a PhD plus sufficient research experience to have demonstrated originality and independence, but typically no more than 5 years past their final postdoc position. Host institutions must be in the UK, Republic of Ireland, LMICs, or approved countries. The scheme emphasises the candidate's independence narrative: what makes your research direction distinctly yours, not a continuation of your supervisor's work, and why Wellcome should back you over other candidates at the same stage. Wellcome Early-Career is considered one of the strongest paths to a junior PI position in the UK biomedical research ecosystem.

Frequently asked questions
+How does the Wellcome Early-Career Award compare to an ERC Starting Grant?
Both support early-independent researchers. Wellcome covers salary + £400K research vs. ERC's €1.5M research-only (host pays salary). Wellcome is UK+ vs. ERC EU+. Wellcome runs 5 years, same as ERC. Wellcome is health-focused; ERC covers all fields. Some researchers hold both sequentially.
+Do I need to already have a junior PI position?
No. The Wellcome Early-Career Award is often used to transition from postdoc to junior PI. The host institution provides the academic affiliation and infrastructure; Wellcome pays your salary.
+Can I move institutions after winning?
Portability between approved institutions is possible with Wellcome's approval. The original award is tied to your identified host but moves typically follow your career with continuity of funding.
+Is the Wellcome Early-Career Award open to non-UK nationals?
Yes. Nationality is not a criterion. What matters is that you hold (or can obtain) the right to work in the UK/host country for the duration of the award.
