Consolidator-level grants: ERC CoG, NWO Vidi

The 5-15-year-post-PhD window (ERC Consolidator widened from 7-12 in the 2027 calls) has its own set of programmes aimed at researchers consolidating their independent group. ERC Consolidator Grant is the flagship, and NWO Vidi (NL) fills the same niche nationally. This page lists every open call matching the mid-career pattern.

For researchers who obtained their PhD within 8 years before 1 October 2026, aiming to establish or expand a research group. Application must be in English and requires a signed embedding guarantee from the Dutch host institution supporting the research.
EMBO
Young Investigator Programme

Supports life scientists who have been group leaders for less than four years at time of application, providing networking support, training opportunities, lab member support and mentoring for four years.

Consolidator Grant
Up to €2M + up to €1M (or €2M for relocation) additional costs
Open to researchers with 5-15 years of experience since PhD completion, any field, any nationality. Research must be hosted at a public or private research organisation in an EU Member State or Associated Country.
FWO
Odysseus programme
€21.8M (total call budget)
Supports outstanding researchers who built a career outside Flanders, providing start-up funding to develop a research group or line of research at a Flemish university.
Volkswagen Foundation
Opus Magnum
Aimed at outstanding professors from the humanities and social sciences, providing funding for a substitute professorship to allow time for a major research project.
DFG
DFG Emmy Noether Programme
Own position + research group funding, up to 6 years
DFG Emmy Noether funds outstanding early-career researchers (≈up to 4y post-PhD with international experience) to lead an independent junior research group at a German institution. The German equivalent of NWO Vidi / ERC Starting tier.
ANR
Tremplin-ERC Consolidator Grant
€116,000
Open to French or foreign researchers affiliated with a French public research institution who were not funded in the ERC Consolidator Grant 2025 call but received an 'A' grade at the second selection stage. Covers all ERC disciplines (LS, PE, SH). Call identifier: T-ERC CoG 2026.
