Senior / advanced PI

Funds research projects linked to ERC proposals (Starting, Consolidator, Advanced Grants) that were positively evaluated and deemed eligible by the ERC but not funded due to budget constraints. Applicants must be public or private non-profit research/knowledge-dissemination organisations based in Spain. Covers personnel costs, minor equipment, materials, and related project expenses. Proposals must be submitted in Spanish.

Open to French or foreign researchers affiliated with a French public research institution who were ranked 'A' (but unfunded) in the ERC Advanced Grants 2025 call. Aims to help improve proposals for resubmission to ERC Consolidator or Advanced Grant. All scientific disciplines eligible. Proposals likely in French; simplified dossier based on prior ERC application documents.

For senior researchers (PhD + 10 years minimum) affiliated to a Belgian university, university hospital, or eligible research institute until 31 Dec 2030. Funds rare disease research (bench to bedside); rare cancers and rare adverse drug events excluded. Proposals must be submitted in English. Up to 30% may be outsourced internationally or to the private sector.

Open to principal investigators at three career levels (Emerging, Ascending, Distinguished). Host institution must be in Denmark. Applicants must apply to the correct career-level category in the NORMA system; applications will not be transferred between categories. Covers data science research.

For senior researchers at the consolidation/leadership stage who obtained their PhD within 15 years before 1 March 2026 (extensions possible). Applicants must demonstrate that Vici will substantially contribute to consolidating their research group. Proposals must be written in English. Hosted at Dutch knowledge institutions via ZonMw/NWO.

For established researchers or teams (2–8 applicants) pursuing bold, creative research to deliver significant shifts in understanding related to human life, health and wellbeing. Lead applicant must be based at a not-for-profit organisation (HEI, research institute, healthcare org, or charity) in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or an eligible LMIC (excl. India and mainland China). No salary for lead applicant unless LMIC-based.

Open to researchers at eligible organisations globally; lead applicant salary not covered unless based in a low- or middle-income country with a permanent/long-term contract requiring external salary recovery. Applications managed in English. Covers discovery research across a broad range of disciplines including sciences, arts, humanities, and social sciences.

For adjunct professors (docents) or independent medical researchers with equivalent qualifications who have no research post or employment contract for the applied period. Grant covers researcher's salary and some research costs. Grant paid to employer; researcher must have no other post during the grant period.

For accomplished senior-level researchers (docent level minimum) conducting medical research in Finland. Covers research costs and group personnel costs (salaries/personal grants); the group leader cannot pay themselves wages from this grant. One application per call. Grant period starts 1 May.

Open to established researchers or teams led by an established researcher based at eligible not-for-profit organisations in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or low- and middle-income countries (excluding India and mainland China). Research must fit within Wellcome's Discovery Research remit and have potential to improve human life, health, and wellbeing across any discipline including STEM, humanities, social science, and public health.

New opening of the Tremplin ERC funding instrument to applicants to the ERC Advanced Grants call. Aimed at lowering barriers for submission of European projects and supporting risk-taking by French research teams. Launched as part of the 2026 Work Programme.

Three funding instruments (Veni, Vidi, Vici) supporting researchers at various career stages to conduct curiosity-driven research. Tailored to early, mid, and senior career phases.

Open to UK research organisations eligible for ESRC funding. Single-institution or multi-institution consortia welcome; no size/geography stipulation. Funds one doctoral focal award plus for data-driven social science research, combining doctoral training (up to 8 studentships/year for 3 years) with training and capacity building for mid-career and senior researchers. Partnerships with business, public, and VCSE sectors encouraged.

Swiss substitute for ERC Advanced Grants for researchers based at Swiss institutions (min. 50% FTE). Single applicant only; PhD required (or 3 years research equivalent). Applicants must have an outstanding track record over the past 10 years. Minimum 30% time commitment to project. Cannot hold a concurrent ERC frontier research grant unless it ends before December 2025.

Co-funded research visits of 3–9 months at US academic institutions for Luxembourgish citizens (pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, and senior researchers). Applicants must be Luxembourgish citizens with proficiency in English. Includes monthly stipend, travel stipend, J-1 visa sponsorship, and benefits. All research areas eligible.

For Professors with their own research group, primarily employed in Denmark at a university or non-profit research institution. Covers data science, AI, computational science, and applications in life/health/sustainability sciences. Applicants must be full-time researchers and contribute to educational activities in data science in Denmark. Projects in finance, surveillance, defense, gaming, etc. are out of scope.

For established researchers and teams pursuing bold, creative research questions across any discipline with a clear link to human health. Lead PI must have international standing. Open to applicants in UK, Republic of Ireland, or OECD low- and middle-income countries (excluding China and India). Covers all resources needed. Large-scale clinical trials not funded.

For clinical professors who are medical doctors/specialist physicians with PhD or dr. med., anchored at a Danish university, hospital, or non-profit research institution. Applicants must maintain 20–50% clinical responsibilities throughout the 5-year grant period. Institutional support letters from heads of both clinical and research departments required.

Individual grant (no co-applicants) for medical research relevant to patients and human health, including translational/clinical research, disease mechanisms, epidemiology, diagnostics, public health, clinical trials, and biomedicine. Master students, PhD students, and postdocs are ineligible. Up to two grants awarded. Applicants may only submit one application across all NNF Research Leader Programme 2025 calls.

For Professors (all ages) with own research group, primarily employed in Denmark at a university or non-profit research institution. Covers data science, AI, computational science, and applications in life/health/sustainability. Applicants must contribute to educational/training activities in data science in Denmark. Full-time commitment required.

For senior researchers. Individual grant for researchers at Dutch knowledge institutions to build their own innovative research group in the Science Domain.

Supports scientific exchange between Luxembourg public research institutions (R2–R4 researchers going abroad; R3–R4 senior researchers visiting Luxembourg). No thematic or geographical limits; secondments to private-sector companies outside Luxembourg are encouraged. PhD candidates are not eligible. Earmarked grants available for collaboration with Quebec, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and UC Berkeley. Covers personnel costs, travel, mobility allowance, and 'other costs' (visa, insurance, childcare).

For established researchers or teams led by an established researcher pursuing bold, creative research to advance understanding or develop methodologies benefiting health. Lead applicant's administering organisation must be in UK, Republic of Ireland, or eligible LMIC (not India or mainland China). Not-for-profit host required. No salary for UK/Ireland-based leads. Coapplicants accepted from any discipline/country except mainland China.

For established, leading PIs with a track record of significant research achievements. Research must be conducted at a host institution in an EU Member State or associated country. Single-PI grant; no consortium required. Open to any field of research on a bottom-up basis. Implemented as a lump sum pilot call. Up to 100% of eligible direct costs plus 25% indirect costs covered.

For senior postdocs, senior researchers, assistant professors, or newly employed associate professors aiming to establish or strengthen an independent research group at a university or non-profit research institution in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden. Scope: industrial or environmental biotechnology (excluding plant science/agriculture/food and pharma/therapeutics). Proposals must include a clear biotechnology element per OECD definition.

For starting group leaders (senior postdocs, senior researchers, assistant professors) with 4–8 years post-PhD. Applicant must be employed and based in Denmark at a university or non-profit research institution. Covers data science, computational science, AI, bioinformatics applied to NNF focus areas (health, sustainability, life science). Must contribute to data science education in Denmark.

For senior faculty/researchers at Nordic research institutions or hospitals with a proven innovation track record (patents, spinouts). Covers med-tech, industrial biotech, pharma, quantum tech; focus on cardiometabolic and infectious diseases. Projects must have commercialisation outlook; must be administered by a non-profit; pre-CVR only. Co-applicants optional, may be international.

For established, leading PIs with a track record of significant research achievements. Any field; bottom-up. Host institution must be a public or private research organisation in an EU Member State or associated country. Single PI applies on behalf of host institution. Lump sum contribution pilot. Up to 100% direct costs + 25% indirect costs.

PI must commit ≥30% working time to project, ≥50% of total time in EU/Associated Country. Single-PI, no consortium required. Excellence is the sole evaluation criterion.

Open to non-Portuguese PhD students (€1,500/month) and senior researchers (€2,000/month) residing abroad who wish to conduct research in Portugal in literature, history, or art history, with the aim of producing a scientific article, publication, or academic thesis. Research must be carried out in Portugal. Proposals must be submitted in Portuguese (per the regulation document).

Funds distinguished researchers (typically 2–3 principal investigators) to collaborate on a broadly defined humanities or social sciences topic at a specific German site, including a fellow programme for visiting researchers from Germany and abroad for up to 2 years. No specific thematic or interdisciplinary requirement. Host institution must be in Germany.
