Microscopy & imaging grants

For clinician scientists (MD/PhD) with GMC registration, a national training number, and some postdoctoral experience, hosted at a UK university, medical school, hospital or research institute. Applicants must remain clinically active during the fellowship. Covers cancer-relevant basic, preclinical, imaging, radiotherapy, EPS, population, and early detection research. Full-time basis; part-time possible with approval.

For scientists establishing an independent research group; must be based at a UK university, medical school, hospital or research institute. Applicant must not already hold a fully-funded salaried position or prior substantial multi-year PI fellowship. Sole lead applicant (PI) only; covers cancer-relevant basic, preclinical, imaging, radiotherapy, EPS, population, and early detection research.

For established scientist group leaders at UK universities, medical schools, hospitals or research institutes. Applicants must hold a PhD or MD with extensive post-doctoral experience. Clinicians are no longer eligible from May 2026. Host institution must contribute 50% of salary. Sole PI only; full-time commitment expected (min 0.5 FTE for part-time). Covers basic, preclinical, imaging, radiotherapy, EPS, population and early detection cancer research.

For new independent group leaders (scientists; clinicians no longer eligible from May 2026) based at a UK university, medical school, hospital or research institution with a fully-funded salary. Applicant must be sole PI. Covers cancer-relevant basic, preclinical, imaging, radiotherapy, EPS, population, and early detection research. Equipment costs capped at £25k; relocation up to £1k.

Open to experienced PIs (PhD awarded by 31 Dec 2021) employed ≥20% at a Swedish university or healthcare institution. Covers two categories: (A) developing new early cancer detection methods (biosamples, imaging, AI/data); (B) validating methods with existing proof-of-concept (TRL ≥4). Excludes prognostic/predictive biomarkers and detection of metastatic/recurrent disease. Application and research programme must be in English; popular science summary in Swedish.

Lead applicant must be based at a not-for-profit organisation in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or a low/middle-income country (excl. India and mainland China). Teams of 3–5 applicants required; coapplicants can be worldwide except mainland China. Supports novel bioimaging technology development at cell-tissue scale. Lead must contribute ≥20% research time and hold a permanent/open-ended contract. UK/Ireland leads cannot claim salary.

Sachbeihilfen (project grants) for innovative research in cancer prevention and early detection (Krebs-Prävention und -Früherkennung). Includes validation and establishment of new early-detection methods (e.g. biomarkers, imaging). Applicants should follow the guidelines from the 'Versorgungsmaßnahmen und -forschung' programme. Proposals must be submitted in German.
