SNSF: open calls

Allows Swiss applicants to include co-applicants in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands (up to 50% of budget), or the UK for humanities/social sciences projects (up to 30% of budget, co-funded with ESRC/AHRC). Single evaluation by SNSF; no additional joint budget; country-specific employment rules apply for staff hired abroad.

Weave/Lead Agency scheme enabling joint Swiss-Croatian research projects; applicants submit either to HRZZ (Croatian Science Foundation) with a copy to SNSF via mySNF within seven days, or to SNSF as Lead Agency. Project duration and start date must match in both countries.

Joint bilateral research proposals between Switzerland and a partner country (6 countries/regions with Lead Agency agreements). Swiss subproject governed by SNSF project-funding rules; proposals must be in English. Max 2 simultaneous project-funding grants per researcher; max 20% of Swiss budget for additional project partners. Evaluation may take longer than regular SNSF projects due to coordination.

Collaborative bottom-up project funding for researchers from 2–3 European countries via the Lead Agency principle. Proposals must be submitted in English (exceptions for Austria and Luxembourg). Each applicant must meet eligibility criteria of their national funder. Swiss sub-project budget submitted via SNSF portal; aims to fund top 20% of proposals in the relevant evaluation round. Trilateral projects with France, Israel, São Paulo, South Africa, South Tyrol, or the US are not possible.

Weave bilateral project funding between Switzerland (SNSF) and Slovenia (ARIS). Swiss applicants apply to SNSF as Lead Agency (max 48 months); Slovenian-led projects go via ARIS (max 36 months). Applicants may hold max two simultaneous SNSF project grants, one of which must be a Weave/Lead Agency project. Topics of concurrent grants must be clearly distinct.

Bilateral Weave procedure between SNSF (Switzerland) and ARIS (Slovenia). Part of SNSF project funding; applicants may hold max 2 simultaneous project grants, one of which must be a Weave/Lead Agency project. Topics of concurrent projects must be clearly distinct. Project start date must be the same in both countries.

Bilateral Weave call between SNSF (Switzerland) and F.R.S.-FNRS (Belgium, Wallonia-Brussels). Swiss applicants apply under SNSF project funding; Belgian partners must be affiliated with one of six eligible universities (UCLouvain, ULB, ULiège, UMons, UNamur, USL-B). Max 2 simultaneous SNSF project grants; topics must be clearly distinct. Non-English submissions possible only in certain humanities/social sciences disciplines with prior agency agreement.

Bilateral Switzerland–Austria Weave call under SNSF project funding and FWF Stand-Alone Projects. Projects must start on the same date in both countries and run for identical durations (max 48 months). Applicants may hold max 2 simultaneous SNSF project grants; one must be a Weave/Lead Agency project. Non-English submissions possible in some humanities/social sciences disciplines by prior agreement with both agencies.

Bilateral Swiss–US research collaboration under the Weave Lead Agency procedure. Swiss applicants must be hosted at Swiss institutions eligible for SNSF project funding; US partners at NSF-eligible institutions. Proposals must be submitted in English, declared as use-inspired, and address broader impact. Project must start on the same date and run for the same duration in both countries (max 48 months).

Open to experienced researchers (≥4 years post-PhD) working at least 50% at an eligible Swiss research institution; applications for mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, biology, medicine, psychology, economics and political science must be in English. International collaboration requires applying via Weave, Lead Agency or International Co-Investigator Scheme.

Bilateral Weave/Lead Agency scheme between SNSF and Luxembourg's FNR for internationally co-funded projects within FNR's CORE programme; applicants may hold max two simultaneous project funding grants, one of which must be this scheme. Proposals to FNR require a parallel copy submitted to SNSF via mySNF within 7 days.

Bilateral Switzerland–Czech Republic collaborative research projects under the Weave procedure. Swiss applicants apply to SNSF as Lead Agency (deadlines 1 April and 1 October); Czech partners apply to GACR. Project must start on the same date in both countries; max duration 36 months. Applicants may hold max two simultaneous SNSF project funding grants, of which one must be a Weave/Lead Agency project.

Enables joint international research projects evaluated by a single funder (SNSF or partner agency) instead of separate national applications; requires co-applicants from Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, or UK (humanities/social sciences only); project partners from other countries may receive up to 20% of the SNSF budget.

Collaborative international project funding scheme for researchers at Swiss institutions partnering with co-applicants in countries with mutual agreements (e.g. Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Israel, USA, South Africa, Sao Paulo, South Tyrol, Croatia, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, UK for SSH). Eligibility requirements follow SNSF Project Funding scheme; budget capped at CHF 250,000/applicant/year (max CHF 200,000 for personnel).

Bilateral project funding under the Weave framework between SNSF and Sweden's Formas (environment, agricultural sciences, spatial planning). Swiss applicant must be hosted at a Swiss institution; max 2 simultaneous SNSF project grants, of which one must be Weave/Lead Agency/ICS. Topics of concurrent grants must be clearly distinct. Project start date must be the same in both countries.

Bilateral Weave scheme between SNSF (as lead agency) and NCN Poland; applicant project topics must be clearly distinct from any other concurrent project funding grant. Budget submitted to SNSF in EUR must match the PLN budget submitted to NCN's OSF system.

Bilateral Switzerland–Sweden Weave call under SNSF project funding. Swedish partner applies to Formas (environment, agricultural sciences, spatial planning). Swiss applicants may hold max 2 simultaneous project grants; one must be a Weave/Lead Agency/ICS project. Topics of concurrent grants must be clearly distinct.

Bilateral SNSF–F.R.S.-FNRS Weave/Lead Agency call for joint research projects between Swiss applicants and researchers at named Wallonia-Brussels universities. Applicants may hold max two simultaneous project grants, one of which must be this Weave project; submission in a non-English language possible only in some humanities/social sciences disciplines.

Bilateral Switzerland–Croatia joint research projects under the Weave procedure. Swiss applicants apply to SNSF as Lead Agency; Croatian partners apply to HRZZ under its 'Research Projects' scheme. Projects must start on the same date in both countries and run for the same duration (max 48 months). Applicants may hold up to 3 simultaneous SNSF grants if one is a Weave/Lead Agency project.

Joint project funding scheme allowing researchers in Switzerland and a partner country to submit one proposal evaluated by a single Lead Agency; Swiss subproject follows SNSF rules, foreign subproject follows partner organisation rules. Applications must be submitted in English when involving multiple funders.

Bilateral Switzerland–Sweden Weave call under SNSF project funding. Swiss applicants must be based at a Swiss institution; Swedish partners apply to Formas (covering environment, agricultural sciences, and spatial planning). Max 2 simultaneous SNSF project grants; one must be a Weave/Lead Agency/ICS project. Topics of concurrent grants must be clearly distinct. Project start date must be the same in both countries.

Bilateral SNSF–DFG Weave scheme for joint Swiss–German research projects. Swiss applicants submit via mySNF; proposals must be in English. Applicants may hold max 2 simultaneous SNSF project grants, one of which must be a Weave/Lead Agency project. Also open for Priority Programmes (max 36 months) and Research Units (max 48 months) under DFG evaluation.

Bilateral Swiss-French Lead Agency scheme run jointly by SNSF and ANR under the PRCI funding line; applicants may hold max two simultaneous project grants and must pre-register before submitting a full proposal. Project duration same in both countries, max 48 months, same start date. Submission in a language other than English only possible in certain humanities/social sciences disciplines, subject to prior agreement.

Open to experienced researchers based at Swiss higher education/research institutions (ETH domain, accredited universities, UAS, UTE, or research facilities of national importance). NCCR director must hold a permanent position, have an SSH background, and commit for at least 4 years. Majority of directors and PIs must be SSH-active. Home institutions must co-fund matching SNSF contribution. Proposals must be submitted in English via mySNF.

Call for at least one additional NCCR in social sciences and humanities (SSH); interdisciplinary proposals allowed but core scientific contribution must remain in SSH. Requires support from a minimum of two home institutions in Switzerland; all proposal documents must be in English; director must hold a permanent position at a recognised home institution.

Call for long-term interdisciplinary research networks (NCCRs) in social sciences and humanities (SSH), based at ≥2 Swiss home institutions; proposals must be in English; director must hold a permanent position and have SSH background.

Supports randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs) of high scientific quality addressing unmet medical/societal needs, not in industry focus. Applicants must be natural persons meeting SNSF eligibility requirements, affiliated with Swiss institutions, forming a research group. Excludes pilot, proof-of-concept, observational, and preclinical studies. Patient and public involvement (PPI) is required. A PPI preparatory grant of up to CHF 5,000 is available alongside the letter of intent.

SNSF Ambizione lets early-career researchers run an independent project at a Swiss host institution (salary + project funds, up to 4 years). Requires a Swiss link (Swiss nationality/degree or 12+ months research in Switzerland).

International interdisciplinary call on transformative technologies addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals; requires stakeholder involvement from academia, industry or society; Swiss co-applicants must meet SNSF Project Funding eligibility criteria and be part of an existing multinational consortium.

Pilot Weave collaboration between SNSF and Spain's AEI enabling joint Swiss-Spanish research project proposals under SNSF's Project Funding scheme. Each agency funds only its own national beneficiaries; no thematic overlap with other ongoing projects allowed.

Pilot Weave Lead Agency scheme between SNSF and AEI (Spain) enabling joint Swiss-Spanish research project proposals; part of SNSF's Project Funding scheme with standard national eligibility rules and each agency funding its own beneficiaries.

Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers to conduct a research stay abroad, aimed at Swiss nationals/permanent residents or those who completed doctoral studies at a Swiss institution. This scheme is being phased out; final deadline is August 2027 before a new scheme launches in 2028.

Bilateral Switzerland–Luxembourg Weave call under SNSF project funding. FNR participation is limited to the CORE multi-annual thematic programme. Applicants may hold max 2 simultaneous SNSF project grants, one of which must be a Weave/Lead Agency project; topics must be clearly distinct. Non-English proposals (humanities/social sciences only) require prior agency agreement.

Joint Swiss-Flemish research projects submitted under Weave/Lead Agency between SNSF and FWO; applicants collaborate with researchers at listed Flemish universities/institutions. Project duration must be identical in both countries and not exceed 48 months; applicants may hold max two simultaneous project funding grants, one being this scheme.

Bilateral Switzerland–Flanders (Belgium) collaborative project funding under the Weave framework, assigned to FWO's Junior and Senior Research Projects programme. Swiss applicants must be based at a Swiss institution; Flemish partners must be at one of the listed eligible universities/institutions. Project duration must be identical in both countries, max 48 months. Applicants may hold max 2 simultaneous SNSF project grants, one of which must be a Weave/Lead Agency project.

Bilateral Switzerland–Croatia collaborative research projects under the Weave procedure. Swiss applicants apply to SNSF as Lead Agency (deadlines 1 April / 1 October); Croatian partners apply to HRZZ under its 'Research Projects' scheme. Bilateral Switzerland–South Tyrol joint project funding under the SNSF Lead Agency/Weave framework. Swiss applicants submit to SNSF; South Tyrol budget sheets (financial plan and schedule) must be completed. Project duration is identical in both countries, max 36 months. Topics must be clearly distinct from any concurrent SNSF project funding grant held by the applicant.

Supports joint research projects between Switzerland and one of six partner countries/regions via bilateral Lead Agency agreements (e.g. ANR/France). Proposals must be in English. Swiss subproject governed by SNSF Project Funding rules; max 2 simultaneous project funding grants, of which 1 must be Weave/Lead Agency/ICIS. No thematic overlap with ongoing project funding grants permitted.

Joint call with the Indian Council of Social Science Research for social science research with Indian partners. SNSF covers Swiss costs; ICSSR covers Indian costs. Up to 10 projects funded. Thematic framework defined in the call document. Maximum duration 3 years, maximum CHF 300,000.

Supports researchers employed at eligible Swiss institutions to participate in major international research infrastructure projects in particle physics, astrophysics and astroparticle physics, including LHC-related maintenance and computing grid contributions.

SNSF participates in co-funded European Partnerships (Biodiversa+, BrainHealth, Clean Energy Transition, Driving Urban Transitions, ERDERA, Forest Partnership, OHAMR, Raw Materials, Water4All, THCS, STR). Swiss researchers apply via national annexes of individual calls; SNSF Project funding rules apply. Proposals must be submitted as part of transnational consortia.

Bilateral Switzerland–Israel joint project funding under the SNSF-ISF Lead Agency procedure. Proposals must be submitted in English. Swiss applicants may hold max 2 simultaneous project funding grants; topics must be clearly distinct. Israeli institutions in territories occupied after 5 June 1967 are excluded. SNSF and ISF alternate as Lead Agency yearly; next submission is to ISF in November 2026.
