FWO: open calls

Horizon Europe Biodiversa+ Partnership call 'BiodivFuture' on novel ecosystems, biodiversity and socio-ecological dynamics; FWO funds Flemish universities and public research institutions via Fundamental Research (FO) or Strategic Basic Research (SBO) channels. SBO projects aimed at spin-off development are ineligible; FWO and BELSPO funding cannot be combined in the same consortium.

Fourth joint transnational call under the Horizon Europe Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, covering four priority areas on blue economy sustainability, digitalisation, bioresources and coastal resilience. FWO funds the Flemish subproject within the consortium under either Fundamental Research or SBO channels; researchers must hold an eligible appointment for the full project duration and SBO spin-off projects are excluded.

Bilateral Flemish-Dutch collaborative fundamental research projects within the scope of NWO Domain Science (ENW), submitted to NWO as Lead Agency; Flemish supervisor must also complete a mandatory administrative submission to FWO via the E-portal with identical application documents.

Transnational call under the Horizon Europe FOREST Partnership for forest, forestry and forest-based sector research. FWO funds Flemish research institutions via FO (fundamental) or SBO (valorisation-focused) channels; applicant must hold an eligible appointment (e.g. ZAP, doctoral degree) covering the full project duration.

Bilateral Flemish-Polish collaborative fundamental research projects submitted to NCN (Poland) as Lead Agency; Flemish supervisor must also complete a mandatory administrative submission to FWO via the E-portal listing all Flemish and non-Flemish team members.

For recently graduated researchers pursuing an independent PhD in strategic basic research. Applicant must be affiliated to a university in the Flemish Community and hold at least a Master's degree from an EEA/Switzerland institution; promotor's recommendation letter is mandatory.

Biennial PhD fellowship funded by the Demoucelle Parkinson Charity for promising young researchers conducting biomedical research on Parkinson's disease, within FWO's fundamental or strategic basic research PhD fellowship programs. Includes bench fee and optional free coaching trajectory. Applicants must apply through the regular FWO PhD fellowship call and separately notify prijzen@fwo.be.

For recently graduated researchers (master's degree, max 2 years before deadline) pursuing an independent PhD fundamental research project, affiliated with a university in the Flemish Community (or the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Leuven/Faculty of Protestant Theology in Brussels). Promotor recommendation letter is a mandatory, scored component.

Bottom-up cross-European initiative supporting excellent collaborative fundamental research projects across national/regional borders; FWO participates as partner alongside a lead partner organisation abroad.

Free trial grant of up to 500k core hours and 1000 GPU hours for up to 8 months, to test software scalability ahead of a full Tier-1 compute application. Open to Flemish university, SOC and public knowledge institution researchers.

Partnership accelerating the transition to a sustainable forest circular-bioeconomy. Requires transnational consortium of partner organisations under the Horizon Europe cofund partnership structure.

Joint computing-time grant for consortia of at least three research groups from different public research institutions, for up to 10 M core hours and/or 40 k GPU hours over a maximum of 12 months. A test application is also available.

Fellowships funded via the King Baudouin Foundation on behalf of the SofinaBoël Fund for Education and Talent, granted by FWO and F.R.S.-FNRS to talented PhD students for a research and/or training stay abroad.

Additional bench fee for FWO postdoctoral fellows (junior or senior) active in cancer research, funded by the King Baudouin Foundation-managed Fund Suzanne Duchesne. Travel grant covering return travel (Brussels–conference venue) for active participation (oral or poster) in an international scientific conference abroad. Applicants must be affiliated with a Flemish university, university hospital, or federal/Flemish scientific institute; postdocs must be within 6 years post-PhD; publication requirements apply (1 peer-reviewed first/last-author paper for EEA/Switzerland/UK conferences, 3+ with 1 first/last-author elsewhere). Max 1 grant per person per civil year for conference/workshop/study visit combined.

Research data storage and management resource (5 TiB to 1 PiB) built on iRODS and Globus for datasets used alongside HPC infrastructure, for a duration of 8 months to 3 years.
